The State of French-Second-Language Education in Canada 2006

The report evaluates progress toward the Government of Canada’s Action Plan for Official Languages. It includes a review of the Agreements on Minority-Language Education and Second-Official-Language Instruction 2005-06 to 2008-09, which define accountability for the use of funds. It also includes a literature review of cognitive and associated academic benefits of second-language learning and official-language bilingualism; national and provincial/territorial trends in FSL education enrolment; and the final update of the CPF survey of FSL teacher supply and demand.

The State of French-Second-Language Education in Canada 2005

University students from across Canada share retrospective information about their secondary and post-secondary FSL decisions, experiences and needs. The report presents a review of the literature about supports that help students to succeed in post-secondary courses offered in French, and profiles a number of university and college French-language programs targeted to FSL students. Also includes FSL enrolment trends and descriptions of new initiatives in national and provincial-territorial support for FSL education.

The State of French-Second-Language Education in Canada 2004

The federal government's Action Plan for Official Languages challenged French-second-language education stakeholders to double the number of functionally bilingual high school graduates by 2013. Enhancing core French and implementing alternate core French delivery programs were identified as major strategies to achieve this goal.

The State of French-Second-Language Education in Canada 2003

The report provides an anticipated update of the 2002 CPF Teacher Shortage Study Summary. Included is a 'bellwether' survey of knowledgeable informants who offer their perceptions and predictions in this area. As outlined in the 2002 report, this year's report explores international immersion programs and their links to the Canadian immersion model.

The State of French-Second-Language Education in Canada 2001

The 2001 report introduced a tool designed for self-assessment of FSL support systems at the school level. The School Self-Assessment Tool is based on research into those factors that contribute to quality FSL programs. The tool is intended to encourage schools to create and continue a dialogue with all stakeholders: parents, teachers, students, and school administrators.

National and provincial findings are broken down into areas of strength and areas for action, and recommendations are made. Stories about innovative FSL programs highlight its potential for further success. Opinion pieces spotlight individual outlooks on aspects of FSL. Previous research findings are shown to shed light on the report. An extensive bibliography follows. An appendix of tables details enrolment figures and trends, and summarizes the report's findings. The sum result points the way to strengthening structures and support for FSL.
