House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages
On April 23 2009, CPF president David M. Brennick and executive director James Shea gave testimony on behalf of graduating students nationwide to the Standing Committee on Official Languages. The Committee, which is made up of members from the Canadian House of Commons, was meeting to determine a course of action in addressing the needs of students who wish to pursue second-language education in college and university. Representatives from CPF and Université Laval were in attendance.

CPF Access to the Future Conference 2008
The following workshops were presented during the CPF Access to the Future Conference held at the Delta Ottawa Hotel & Suites the weekend of October 16, 2008.
Running an Effective Parent Information Night/Using the CPF School Self-Assessment Tool: Enhancing Recruitment and Retention

This workshop will focus on grassroots activities at the Chapter level. It will provide basic information and strategies aimed at enhancing the delivery of factual parent information and the associated recruitment of students for FSL programs, as well as the retention of those students, especially at the high school entry point. The workshop will also review the promotion and use of the CPF Self-Assessment Tool.

Practical FSL Research: Students with Academic Challenges in FSL Programs
Presented by: Corinne Haigh PhD, Dept. of Psychology, McGill University

The workshop will provide a brief overview of bilingualism in the general population and of existing research on bilingualism and oral and written language difficulty. Dr. Haigh will then share preliminary results of a longitudinal study of English-speaking children enrolled in French immersion and English-only programs conducted by McGill researchers Corinne Haigh, Caroline Erdos, Fred Genesee, and Robert Savage. The workshop will end with practical advice for identifying children at risk for language or literacy difficulties and for promoting their success in immersion programs.

A Common Framework and Portfolio for Languages in Canada

Ministries of education across Canada are currently reviewing the applicability of a common framework for languages to help define, track and recognize student language proficiency levels. CASLT is working to increase awareness on the framework and to share sample components of a portfolio for languages that allows learners to track their progress, to reflect on their learning, and to set goals within the classroom and beyond.

Tracking of FSL Funds
